Cash and non-cash payments in Tajikistan: 14% vs 15% VAT and transparent accounting through ERP

Non-cash payment is now a tax difference, not just a convenience. How to put payment records in order.

Published: 2 min read
Short answer: since 1 January 2024, Tajikistan's standard VAT rate is 14% on non-cash and 15% on cash operations (Economist.kg). To benefit, a company must track payments by type precisely and manage its shift to non-cash. Odoo does this automatically. Confirm current rates and rules with your accountant.

Why does it matter?

  • On the same revenue the tax differs by 1 percentage point, which is real money for low-margin trade.
  • Customers are ready: digital payment users grew from 1.6 million in 2016 to 6.2 million by mid-2023 (US International Trade Administration).
  • Transparent non-cash turnover helps with bank loans and inspections.
  • The US State Department notes that digital payments are slowly reducing the grey cash economy, so transparency expectations will only grow.

How is it set up in Odoo?

Tracking by payment type means every receipt is recorded separately as cash, card, transfer or online payment.

  • Payment methods are separated in the till and POS.
  • Tax rules are configured by payment form.
  • Bank statements are reconciled with invoices automatically.
  • Management sees the cash/non-cash split by branch, manager and customer.
  • Cash collection and till balances are controlled per shift.

How do you shift to non-cash without losing customers?

  1. Measure today's cash share at every point of sale.
  2. Offer convenient non-cash options: card, QR, transfer.
  3. Connect payments to the ERP so nobody reconciles by hand.
  4. Review the non-cash share report every month.
