Electrical equipment wholesale: thousands of SKUs, project quotes and stock control

How an electrical distributor can run its catalog, units of measure, project quotations and reservations in one system: pain points, fixes and sourced numbers.

Published: 7 min read
Short answer: Electrical wholesale software keeps thousands of SKUs, mixed units of measure (meters, cable drums, boxes), project quotations and customer reservations in one database. An ERP such as Odoo shows sales reps the real available stock, puts discounts under approval rules and tracks partial deliveries to job sites without losing anything.

From the outside, electrical wholesale looks simple. Inside, it is one of the hardest distribution businesses in Uzbekistan. A catalog holds thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of items, cable arrives on drums and leaves by the meter, one construction project needs a bill of materials hundreds of lines long, and the contractor collects it in three or four trips. That is why electrical wholesale software has to be more than a spreadsheet or a cash register program: it has to connect sales, warehouse and finance. The market keeps growing. According to Uzbekistan's Statistics Agency, construction work worth 247.3 trillion soums was completed in January–October 2025, up 14.7% year on year (stat.uz, 2025). Every new building is a new electrical order.

What problems do electrical distributors usually face?

Electrical wholesale combines large-catalog management, project selling and warehouse logistics in one business. The patterns we see most often in projects:

  • One product is entered under three names, so stock is split across three records, the rep says "out of stock" and the goods sit on the shelf.
  • Cable arrives on 100 or 200 meter drums, is sold by the meter, and leftover lengths are not tracked anywhere.
  • Quotes are built in Word or Excel from an old price list, and each rep decides the discount alone.
  • Goods "held" for one customer get sold to another, because the reservation exists only in the storekeeper's head.
  • A site takes its order in parts, and what has shipped and what is still owed lives in a separate notebook.

These are not small issues. In an ECR Retail Loss study, around 60% of inventory records in retail contained errors, and correcting them lifted sales by 4–8% (ECR Retail Loss, via RGIS). The mechanism in wholesale is the same: when the system says "no", the customer goes elsewhere.

How do you organize a catalog with thousands of SKUs?

Step one is cleaning the catalog. Each item needs exactly one product record: manufacturer code, brand, series, technical parameters (cross-section, rated current, number of poles, IP rating) and unit of measure. We explain the difference between SKU and item number in our SKU guide.

In Odoo this works as follows:

  • A category tree: cable and wire, modular breakers, lighting and so on.
  • Attributes and variants: a 16A, 25A and 32A breaker of the same model share one template, but each variant has its own stock.
  • Search by barcode and manufacturer code, so reps find the right item regardless of how they type the name.
  • Supplier price list import: a new product line is created from a file, not typed in one record at a time.

Meters, drums and boxes: how are units of measure handled?

Unit of measure conversion means the system automatically turns the purchase unit (drum, box) into the sales unit (meter, piece). In Odoo the base unit for cable is the meter, purchases are made in drums, and the system knows that 1 drum = 100 meters. A rep sells 37 meters, 37 meters leave the warehouse, and 63 meters remain on the drum.

If each drum is tracked as a lot, the remaining length on every drum is visible, and the storekeeper will not hand a 15 meter offcut to a customer who needs 40. For sockets and breakers you define packaging (say, 10 per box), so a wholesale customer can only order whole boxes.

How can you prepare project quotations faster?

Project sales are the main revenue stream for an electrical distributor. An electrical contractor or general contractor sends a specification hundreds of lines long and asks several suppliers for prices. The order goes to whoever answers fastest and most accurately.

In McKinsey's 2024 B2B survey, customers use an average of ten interaction channels during a purchase (five in 2016), and more than half say they are likely to switch suppliers after a poor cross-channel experience (McKinsey, 2024).

In the system, the quotation process looks like this:

  • The Excel specification is imported into an Odoo Sales quotation, and items are matched by code automatically.
  • Prices come from the customer group's price list: installers, dealers, large contractors.
  • If a rep goes beyond the allowed discount, the quote goes to a manager for approval.
  • Current stock and incoming receipts are shown next to each line, so the quote states a realistic lead time.
  • The quote is sent as a PDF or through the customer portal, where the customer accepts it online.

McKinsey calculated that for the average S&P 1500 company, a 1% price increase with stable volumes lifts operating profit by 8% (McKinsey, 2003). For example, if a distributor turns over 10 billion soums a year and reps give an average extra 1% discount at their own discretion, that is 100 million soums of lost revenue per year (an illustrative calculation; turnover and discount are assumptions).

How do you control reservations and partial deliveries?

A reservation locks warehouse stock to a confirmed order so it cannot be sold to someone else. In Odoo, stock is reserved automatically when an order is confirmed, and other reps no longer see it as available. Reservations can expire: if the customer does not pay, the hold is released.

When a site collects goods in parts, the system creates a separate document for each shipment. The first truck takes 60%, and the remaining 40% stays as a backorder. The rep, the storekeeper and the accountant all see the same number. An e-invoice is issued for the shipped part; we covered Didox integration in a separate article.

Atradius's 2024 US survey found that half of all B2B invoices are overdue, and bad debts average 8% of B2B credit sales (Atradius, 2024). In Odoo each customer gets a credit limit, and new orders are blocked once it is exceeded.

What changes after automation: in numbers

  • Stock accuracy: with nearly 60% of records wrong, correcting them raised sales by 4–8% (ECR Retail Loss, via RGIS).
  • Price discipline: a 1% improvement in price adds 8% to operating profit on average (McKinsey, 2003).
  • Customer retention: more than half of B2B buyers are likely to switch suppliers after a poor cross-channel experience (McKinsey, 2024).
  • Receivables: where half of invoices are overdue, credit limits and automatic reminders cut the risk of bad debt (8% of credit sales on average) (Atradius, 2024).
  • Overall return: Nucleus Research found that ERP returns $7.23 for every dollar spent (Nucleus Research, 2014).

How does Deep Vision approach this?

Deep Vision is an official Odoo Gold Partner based in Tashkent. Odoo's partner page lists 7 certified experts on our team and 24 client references, mostly in wholesale, retail and manufacturing, with 89% customer retention. In our experience with this kind of business, a rollout for electrical and technical distributors usually runs like this:

  • Catalog audit: merge duplicates, set up attributes and units of measure.
  • Price lists and discount rules: customer groups and approval thresholds.
  • Sales and Inventory go-live: typically 6–8 weeks in a standard case.
  • Tax documents connected through our ready-made Didox and Asl Belgisi modules.

An example of a large catalog: Timsoll, an auto parts company from Kokand, runs 18 branches and more than 7,000 SKUs in Odoo, and setting up a new product went from 6–8 months to 2–3 days (Timsoll case). The Deep Vision team also translated Odoo into Uzbek, so storekeepers and reps can work in their own language. For the general wholesale approach, see Odoo ERP for wholesale.

Frequently asked questions

What software suits electrical equipment wholesale?

An ERP that keeps the catalog, price lists, reservations, partial deliveries and receivables in one database. Odoo covers this with its Sales, Inventory and Accounting apps and has an Uzbek interface.

Can we buy cable by the drum and sell it by the meter?

Yes. Odoo sets the purchase unit (drum) and sales unit (meter) separately and converts automatically. If you track drums as lots, you also see what is left on each drum.

How do we load more than 10,000 SKUs?

Supplier price lists and your current Excel base are cleaned and imported. The main work is not technical: it is merging duplicates and agreeing on naming rules.

How long does implementation take?

Standard Sales and Inventory often go live in 6–8 weeks; a full project usually takes 2–6 months.

Where should warehouse accounting start?

With a stock count and catalog cleanup. Practical steps are in our warehouse accounting guide.
