Switching your Odoo partner: how to hand the project to a new team safely

Project stalled, slow answers, no access to your code? What to collect before switching Odoo partners and how to make the handover safe.

Published: 5 min read
Short answer: Switching your Odoo partner is a normal business decision when a project has stalled, responses are slow or the system's quality is poor. To switch safely, first secure the database, admin access, the source code of custom modules, documentation and confirmation of who owns the subscription on odoo.com. Deep Vision, an Odoo Gold Partner from Tashkent, always starts a takeover from another team with an audit.

Many companies start Odoo with one partner and later see that things are not going as expected. At that point most owners fear change: “Everything is in their hands; if we leave, the system stops.” In reality, changing your Odoo partner is a safe process with the right preparation. This article covers when it is time to switch, what to collect beforehand, how the handover works and what the first 30 days with a new partner should look like.

What does switching Odoo partners mean, and when is it needed?

Switching Odoo partners is the planned transfer of responsibility for supporting and developing your Odoo system, and managing the subscription, from one implementation partner to another.

A switch does not always mean someone failed. Sometimes the company grows and needs a different kind of team. Sometimes the problems are serious. These signs suggest it is time to think about a change.

  • The project has dragged on for months with no clear end date.
  • Answers to your questions take days or even weeks.
  • Every small change turns into new custom code and an extra invoice.
  • Bugs keep coming back; what was fixed breaks again.
  • Report numbers do not match accounting, and nobody explains why.
  • You are not given project documentation or source code.
  • Nobody on the team understands your industry or finance.
  • Your Odoo version is outdated and no upgrade plan is offered.

One or two signs may be solved by talking. If there are many, waiting gets more expensive. McKinsey found that each additional year of an IT project's duration adds another 15% to cost overruns (McKinsey).

What should you collect before switching?

This is the most important part. Complete this list before you stop working with the current partner.

  • A full backup of the database (database and filestore together).
  • Admin access to every environment: production, test, the server or Odoo.sh.
  • Clarity on whose name the server, domain and SSL certificate are registered under.
  • Source code for all custom modules, ideally a Git repository with full history.
  • Documentation and specs: which module was written and why.
  • Keys and settings for integrations with Didox, Asl Belgisi, banks and other systems.
  • Whose name the Odoo Enterprise subscription on odoo.com is in, and who has been paid.
  • A list of open tasks and known bugs.

The most common problems are source code and subscription ownership. If you do not have the code for your custom modules, a new team cannot support them. Check your contract to see who owns the code, and in future projects write it into the contract from day one.

How do the Odoo subscription and a partner change work?

An Odoo Enterprise subscription is a licence agreement with Odoo itself; the partner implements and supports the system.

Ideally, the subscription is in your company's name and the partner is linked to it. In that case, changing partners usually means contacting Odoo and asking to change the partner linked to your subscription. Confirm the exact procedure and timing directly with Odoo, as it may depend on your contract type. If the subscription is in the partner's name, resolve its transfer to your company first. Check the new partner's status in the Odoo partner directory. Under Odoo's official requirements, Ready means 10 new Enterprise users a year and 1 certified staff member; Silver means 75 users, 3 certifications and at least 70% retention; Gold means 300 users, 6 certifications and at least 80% retention (odoo.com). What should the first 30 days with a new partner look like?

Days 1–7: access and backup. The new team gets access, verifies the backup and sets up a test environment. Nothing changes in production.

Days 8–20: audit. Custom modules, access rights, accounting settings, inventory valuation, integrations and performance are reviewed. The output is a clear report: what works, what is risky, what is unnecessary.

Days 21–30: plan. Based on the audit, the first phase is defined: urgent fixes, then stabilization, then improvement. Each phase gets a written scope, timeline and acceptance criteria.

The biggest mistake in this period is a promise to “rewrite everything” before any audit. A good new partner understands first and proposes second. Common pitfalls: 7 ERP implementation mistakes.

How should you talk to the previous partner?

Keep the conversation calm and specific. State the decision first, then send a written list of what needs to be handed over, with a deadline. Discuss any open invoices separately and do not mix them with the data handover. In most cases the outgoing team also wants a clean handover, because it affects their reputation. If something is never handed over, the new partner will identify during the audit what really matters and propose an alternative.

How can you reduce the risks of switching providers?

  • Close the relationship with the previous partner in writing and on good terms.
  • Freeze production during the handover, allowing only essential fixes.
  • Avoid switching at month end or during reporting deadlines.
  • Tell staff clearly who to contact from now on.
  • Ask the new partner for a written audit report.

How does Deep Vision take over a project from another team?

Deep Vision is an official Odoo Gold Partner from Tashkent. Its Odoo partner directory page (checked 13 October 2026) lists 7 certified experts (versions 17 to 19), 20+ client references and 89% customer retention. Our approach:

  • We always start with an audit and make no promises before it.
  • We first assess which existing code can be kept, and propose replacing the rest with standard Odoo.
  • Accounting and finance settings are reviewed by experienced specialists who know finance.
  • We have ready modules for Didox and Asl Belgisi that can replace older integrations.
  • We work in Uzbek and Russian, and our team produced Odoo's Uzbek translation.
  • Deep Vision has moved companies from 1C, SAP and scattered tools to Odoo, so complex transitions are familiar ground.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose data if I switch Odoo partners?

No, as long as you secure a full backup and admin access first. The database belongs to your company.

What if the previous partner will not hand over the source code?

Check your contract and raise code ownership in writing. Sometimes the easier path is to replace unnecessary modules with standard Odoo features.

How long does a switch take?

Access and audit usually fit within the first month. What follows depends on the audit and the state of the system.

Do I need to buy the Odoo licence again?

Usually not. Your subscription stays active; only the linked partner changes. Confirm the exact procedure with Odoo.

Does Deep Vision work on systems implemented by another partner?

Yes. We start with an audit and then propose a phased plan.
